Exploring Undergraduate Research Opportunities (URO) at Carnegie Mellon

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) offers undergraduates a wealth of opportunities to dive into cutting-edge research. From constructing mobile robots and producing documentary films to analyzing cultural trends and developing innovative digital communication tools, students find themselves at the epicenter of the university's intellectual community. Students experience the exhilarating (and occasionally chaotic) journey of generating fresh insights and knowledge.

CMU embraces a comprehensive understanding of research, encompassing not only scientific and technical domains but also activities within the arts and humanities. Research at Carnegie Mellon is defined as: "Efforts, scholarly or artistic, that contribute to the creation of new knowledge, enhance problem-solving capabilities, including design and analysis, generate original critical or historical theories and interpretations, or result in the production of art or artistic performances."

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholar Development supports student research across all disciplines. They offer SURG grants to cover research costs, Summer Fellowships for full-time research projects, and Presentation Awards for students presenting their work at academic conferences. Every May, they host the Meeting of the Minds, a university-wide celebration of undergraduate research.

Advising: They provide guidance on pursuing interests and participating in undergraduate research at Carnegie Mellon.

Workshops: They hold writing workshops each semester to help students with the proposal writing process.

Individual Meetings: They offer one-on-one sessions to review students' proposals and provide recommendations.

So, what's your groundbreaking idea?
