Understanding the New Digital SAT: Your Questions Answered

Feeling overwhelmed by the arrival of the digital SAT? Don't worry, we've got your back! Let's take a moment to unpack what this means for you. Mostly, your preparation for the digital SAT will resemble your previous study habits, maybe even easier!

So, What Is This Digital SAT?

In January 2022, the College Board shared that they'll be transitioning the SAT to a digital format starting in Spring 2023 for international students and Spring 2024 for those in the U.S. Instead of the conventional paper-based linear exam, students will navigate the updated and upgraded SAT’s four adaptive sections using the Bluebook Testing App on their computer or tablet.

The "Adaptive" Test Explained

Now, you might be wondering what "adaptive" means. Essentially, this new format adjusts to your performance within the first module of each section (Reading & Writing and Math), modifying the difficulty level of the questions you'll face in the second module of each section based on your initial performance.

What Can You Expect on the Digital SAT?

While the content remains much like the paper-based exam, the presentation differs. The Reading and Writing section of the digital SAT evaluates students in four key areas: Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions. However, instead of lengthy, complex passages, the digital SAT Reading and Writing section comprises mini passages ranging from 25-150 words, each associated with a single, specific question.

The Math section of the digital SAT tests students in four main mathematical fields: algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry. You'll still answer a mix of multiple-choice and student-produced response questions, like the old test, with around thirty percent being word problems. But these word problems will be shorter, and students can now use a calculator for both modules of the Math section. Goodbye, no-calculator section! Plus, each module will now last 35 minutes, as opposed to the previous 55 minutes. This reduction should be a relief for students who found the longer section challenging.

What They Are Saying

The general response to the College Board's pilot programs has been quite optimistic. Overall, students feel more at ease with the digital SAT, thanks to its shorter duration (now only 2 hours and 14 minutes), more streamlined content, and logical arrangement of skills and question difficulty levels. (Questions on the updated exam are primarily classified based on the skills they evaluate, and are arranged from simplest to most complex.)

Teachers and other educational professionals also endorse the merits of the revised test, stating that the digital format simplifies its administration, with the app now handling aspects like time tracking, test submission, and other administrative tasks. From an examination security standpoint, it's noteworthy that dishonest practices are virtually eliminated with the digital SAT, owing to its personalized, adaptive structure.
